The Cliffs

Some of the Midwest’s most striking landscapes are tucked into the forests of Hocking Hills.

Trails wind beneath towering sandstone cliffs, through deep gorges, and past seasonal waterfalls and enormous recess caves. There are short walks with plenty to see and longer routes worth setting aside an afternoon for. Spring brings fresh green and flowing falls, autumn fills the woods with color, and winter gives familiar trails a whole different feel as falling water frozen in place.

Here are a few of our favorite local hikes.

Cantwell Cliffs

Directly adjacent to the property and reached by a 5 minute drive down route 374. Towering rock walls, stone steps, and narrow passages make this a memorable introduction to Hocking Hills. A good choice for those who enjoy a more rugged walk through the woods.

Rock House

Stone openings let daylight into a cave set high in the cliff face. The unusual formations make this a particularly memorable stop.

Old Man's Cave

Waterfalls, bridges, and sculpted sandstone give this gorge plenty to discover along the way. It’s a classic first stop, with connecting trails for anyone who wants to keep exploring.

Ash Cave

A wooded approach opens beneath an enormous sandstone overhang. The scale is remarkable, and the shorter approach makes it a lovely option for a slower outing.

Conkle's Hollow

Take the lower trail into the gorge for a close view of its towering walls, or choose the more demanding rim trail for views across the forest. They offer very different ways to experience this beautiful preserve.

Cedar Falls

Follow the trail through the hemlocks to water spilling over smooth sandstone. Pair it with Old Man’s Cave or Ash Cave for a longer day outdoors.
